"Free Speech" verses Accountability
October 27, 2006 | By Sniper One |
There are too many people in this country who equate free speech, with being unaccountable for what they say in public.
A prime example of this would be the Dixie Chicks. They seem to feel that their inappropriate comments overseas should not of cost them fans. After all, they were just exercising their right to ”free speech”.
I exercise my right to “free speech” everyday by writing in this blog. Does that mean that I can’t be held accountable for what I say, because it’s “free speech”.
What a silly idea!
If you could say or write whatever you wanted without the threat of being held accountable for your words, why are their libel and slander laws? Why are some kinds of speech being blocked as “hate speech” if there is no responsibility for your actions?
The whole argument boils down to a “Free Speech for me, but not for Thee” kind of an argument. Sorry folks, but what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
If you accept that one group has the right to free speech, you must accept that all groups have the right to free speech.
America can be a tough place to live. It is a land where someone can stand on a soapbox and scream at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime denouncing.
People have the right to think, and to argue that you are wrong. I know, I have enough people telling me I am wrong. It’s all part of America.
The fact that people chose not to purchase records does not mean that your right to free speech was some how denied you. The fact that radio stations, based on outrage listeners, stopped playing your music, doesn’t violate your freedom to speech either.
You can choose to speak stupidly, and America will vote with their wallet… by not buying your stuff, or going to your concerts.
This does not mean that your free speech is being violated.
If not getting radio airplay is a violation of free speech, then there are hundreds of thousands of bands that are being repressed.
I’m not the radio! Help! Help! I’m being repressed!
