Army Times Vs DOD

(DOD) Response to Army Times Editorial

On Saturday, Nov. 4, the Army Times released an editorial titled, “Time for Rumsfeld to go.” It is important to first note that the “military papers” that have run this editorial are not owned, managed, or controlled by the U.S. military. They are privately held newspapers forming part of the Arlington, Va.-based Gannett publishing chain.

It is important to keep in mind the the Army Times does not speak for the military, as the blurb above illustrates. So in essence, this is not the DOD arguing with itself.

The Army Times editorial goes over many of the same arguments that have been circulating around Rumsfeld for some time. There is nothing new presented, and the DOD Response is pretty much the same argument for Rummy to stay where he is.

Rumsfeld is an easy target to go after. As the Secretary of Defense you can easily blame him for the perceived gloom and doom in Iraq. However, you can easily blame him for the successes as well… not that anyone would give credit where credit is due.

When compared to men like Murtha, who are convinced that Unicorns and Rainbows will cause Iraq to become a peaceful place if America would just remove the troops, I find Rumsfeld to be far more realistic and sane.

I would love to have the optimism of men like Murtha, however since I live in a reality based world, and I don’t believe in magical unicorns, fairy dust, or happy endings… I find his predictions of world peace to be stunningly ignorant, especially for a former Marine and a combat Vet.

So who do you believe? Men like Rumsfeld who say, sure Iraq sucks right now, but we can win this. Or men like Murtha who say if we pull out now, there will be a magical transformation that will bring about peace.

I ain’t much for trusting in magic.
