Ok, it wasn’t Al Maliki that was telling Sadr to disarm…

Update: 2100 Wrong again! I was right the first time

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq’s prime minister has told Shiite militiamen to surrender their arms or face an all-out assault by U.S.-backed Iraqi forces, senior Iraqi officials said Wednesday, as President Bush said he will commit an additional 21,500 American combat troops to the war.

Under pressure from the U.S., Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has agreed to crack down on fighters controlled by his most powerful political ally, Muqtada al-Sadr, a radical Shiite cleric, according to officials. Previously, al-Maliki had resisted the move.

“Prime Minister al-Maliki has told everyone that there will be no escape from attack,” a senior Shiite legislator and close al-Maliki adviser said. “The government has told the Sadrists: ‘If we want to build a state we have no other choice but to attack armed groups.’”

They have the support of the Sunni Ayatollah…

(Al Jazeera) Iraq’s national security adviser has said that the country’s most senior Shia cleric supports a government attempt to disarm the country’s sectarian militias.

Mowaffaq al-Rubaie said he had secured Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s support during a meeting in the city of Najaf on Wednesday.

The Shia clergyman gave his assent as Iraq’s government pushed ahead with a plan that will attempt to stablise Baghdad, the country’s capital, by disarming Shia and Sunni militias.

This may be IS part of the President’s “surge” of troops to Iraq. Removing the militias is hugely important.

Update: 2100 Sounds like we are going to get what we want, a loosening of the ROE, and more rope to go after the problem in Baghdad from the Iraqi government. If it works, Bush is a genius, if it fails… she’s still the shrub.

Of course, in the press it’s going to be a failure no matter what…

This more than likely will not have any effect on Sadr, as he is Shia, and this is a Sunni cleric that is backing the plan.
