These two people, and the topic have been pretty much beaten to death. Edward’s campaign may, or may not, of fired them, but honestly… that’s not the issue I want to discuss.

My question, is why did Edwards feel the need to hire a blogger in the first place?

After all, what does blogging require… a computer with a keyboard, the ability to connect to the Internet, and an account with someone like Blogger. There is no entrance exam. No requirement for a domain name, or a degree in English. It doesn’t require the ability to write coherent sentences, spell, or even conform to the rules of language. It also doesn’t require that you have ub3r l33t skillz, d00d. In short, anyone can blog, and many people do.

So why hire one, when any twelve year old with a computer can do it?

You may say that you hire a blogger because of the popularity, and number of readers they have on the Internet. Well, that popularity has a price. How do you get attention on the Internet? You say wild and outlandish things to attract readers. You have to stand up and be purposefully radical and stupid in many cases in order to get people to pay attention to you.

In the case of political blogging, every word you say that endears you with one group is going to have an equal but opposite effect with the opposing group. You say “Screw Them” like KOS, and your going to be a hero to the left, and Satan himself to the right.

Popular bloggers have too much Internet baggage. Every post, every comment, every google-able word becomes their undoing, as we have seen with Marcotte and McEwan.

John Edwards would of been much better off hiring an unknown. Someone without a lot of Internet baggage. Perhaps hiring a former speech-writer or other proven writer/communicator to blog. In this case, being the “Blogger In Charge” for a Presidential Campaign, would bring it’s own popularity via the position itself. The important thing for the candidate is that you have an eloquent communicator with no Internet skeletons in the position.

In that sense, all of us who blog have already shot ourselves in the foot. Unless your such a “beige” blogger that you’ve never said anything of interest to anyone, but then you wouldn’t bother blogging, would you?

Update:

The tone and the sentiment of some of Amanda Marcotte’s and Melissa McEwan’s posts personally offended me. It’s not how I talk to people, and it’s not how I expect the people who work for me to talk to people. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that kind of intolerant language will not be permitted from anyone on my campaign, whether it’s intended as satire, humor, or anything else. But I also believe in giving everyone a fair shake. I’ve talked to Amanda and Melissa; they have both assured me that it was never their intention to malign anyone’s faith, and I take them at their word. We’re beginning a great debate about the future of our country, and we can’t let it be hijacked. It will take discipline, focus, and courage to build the America we believe in.

On what planet is referring to Christianity as a misogynist “ancient mythology” not maligning someone’s faith? Or was is a compliment? You’ll have to bear with me here, since I’m one of the 200 million plus American dimwits who believes in the “mythology.”

The other blogger, Melissa McEwan, referred to “Bush’s ‘wingnut Christofascist base’” which for those of you who don’t have an etiquette book handy, is actually an affectionate way to describe people who believe in Jesus (silly you if you thought she was maligning your faith).

Last but not least… Darleen’s Place…

If a campaign asked me to blog for it, I would decline. Because I carry much baggage at my site (s) and I know it, admit it, and will defend it all. I wouldn’t trade my baggage for all the glory in the world of being associated with a big name campaign…and, I wouldn’t want to cause any damage to said campaign. I have the balls to say NO…and the confidence to say so without second thought. Amanda and the other lady do not.

[...] Her inclusion (to Edwards Campaign) did seem to make a difference to a lot of people on right… even though they weren’t going to vote for him anyway. This whole “blogger controversy” has struck me as a tempest in a teapot, which is why I’ve written (sarcasm) so much about it (one post). [...]
