As usual, the left spins faster than a pulsar. If you don’t believe that a surge of 21,500 troops into Baghdad will do any good, then you must believe that a minor troop withdrawal of 1,600 British troops is a sign from God that we are doomed to fail in Iraq.

LONDON - Britain will withdraw around 1,600 troops from Iraq in the coming months and aims to further cut its 7,100-strong contingent by late summer if Iraqi forces can secure the country’s south, Prime Minister Tony Blair said Wednesday.

Of course, the right is spinning it to be a positive thing, proving that we can win in Iraq.

“The British have done what is really the plan for the country as a whole, which is to transfer security responsibility to the Iraqis as the situation permits,” Rice said at a press conference in Berlin, where she was in meetings on the Mideast peace process. “The coalition remains intact and, in fact, the British still have thousands of troops deployed in Iraq.”

Cheney called it good news.

“I look at it and see it is actually an affirmation that there are parts of Iraq where things are going pretty well,” Cheney told ABC News while in Tokyo.

“In fact, I talked to a friend just the other day who had driven to Baghdad down to Basra, seven hours, found the situation dramatically improved from a year or so ago, sort of validated the British view they had made progress in southern Iraq and that they can therefore reduce their force levels,” he added.

I’ll wait to pop the cork on that champagne until after the withdrawal and Basarah doesn’t erupt in violence. I believe we can win, I believe the Iraqis can govern themselves, but that doesn’t mean that I am not cautious.

I’d rather stay too long and be wrong, than not stay long enough and invite disaster.
