I spotted this post over at (Kirsten) Powers Point. If you don’t know who Kirsten Powers is, then you need to meet one of the most grounded, intelligent, respectable, Blue Dog Democrats, currently in the US.

I was getting all set to argue with her, when I found out she and I were on the same page after all.

Character Trumps Policy

Bad news for a few Republican presidential wannabees: character trumps policy for voters.

Though I’m dubious that this is true. Voters have a way of overlooking questionable personal behavior they don’t like if the candidate is connecting with them on some level.

This is equally applicable to both Rudy and Newt. Neither of which are exactly poster children for “Husband of the Year”.

WASHINGTON - For all the policy blueprints churned out by presidential campaigns, there is this indisputable fact: People care less about issues than they do about a candidate’s character.

A new Associated Press-Ipsos poll says 55 percent of those surveyed consider honesty, integrity and other values of character the most important qualities they look for in a presidential candidate.

Just one-third look first to candidates’ stances on issues; even fewer focus foremost on leadership traits, experience or intelligence.

I guess I’m one of the weird ones. I would rather vote for someone who was right on policy, and a complete disaster at home, than a man who was a policy dumbass, yet father of the year.

In a perfect world, we could have our cake (policy) and eat it too (morals). However when you’re dealing with politicians, I’ll just be happy to get the lesser of two evils.

In my opinion, if this idea of character trumping policy was correct, then Mormon Mitt would be way out in front. What’s more moral, the candidate(s) who are serial monogamists, or the non-drinking, non-smoking, father of the year, Salt Lake City Olympic Game savior, Mitt Romney?

I just hope we can get a ticket that is the best of both worlds. A moral guy, and a policy guy. I’d rather have a policy guy as CINC, and a moral guy as the VP.
