Once upon a time a Conservative actor made his appearance on the GOP stage and he was maligned and subordinated by the Republican establishment until suddenly the traction he was getting could not be ignored. Fred Thompson is a Conservative actor.

But Fred Thompson is no Ronald Reagan.

Earlier this week FOCUS ON THE FAMILY ministry leader, Doctor James Dobson, came out with a disconcerting pronouncement and less than subtle signal that “Law and Order” star Fred Thompson, the former Senator from Tennessee, might not be a Christian’s Christian. While I find it Eternally dangerous to dabble in the damnation game, I find some substance to the question of Fred Thompson as the long awaited independently electable Conservative savior.

My curiosity is piqued by a phone conversation that took place between two old friends back on March 9th. The transcript of that conversation is not readily available, but Senator Fred Thompson and Senator John McCain go way back (think McCain-Feingold) and apparently had a grand chat. Two short days later, Freddy begins his political strip tease on “Fox News Sunday”.

Let Jane connect some dots for you. The buzz in my home state of South Carolina is that Lindsey Graham has become unfit for service to harvest the true Conservative vote in the South with that whole Gang of Fourteen mess and will not even be re-elected to his Senate seat. He didn’t dance with the one who brung him, and Carolinians won’t forget that. I think that’s just the cover for other **issues** which might make him less suitable to balance a ticket to the Conservative side. Those things will poke their heads from behind the door soon enough. And John McCain can ill afford that Samsonite.

JANE’S CAUTIONARY TALE: Sometimes an actor is just acting. And sometimes a Senator from Tennessee is just wanting to be Vice President.

You heard it here first. Psst…pass it on…

Update: Sniper One -

I am pretty sure anyone who has read my posts on John McCain knows that I will not, under any circumstances, vote for McCain, or McCain on a ticket.

Well, the only possible exception to that would be if John McCain suddenly clicked on my paypal donate button and dropped about ten million dollars to vote his way. However, I’m sure John has better things to do with ten million than buy my vote.

I can be bought, I’m just in no ways cheap.

All of these thoughts have crossed my mind. But here is the problem with your theory.

The ONLY reason Fred Thompson is gaining traction is because he is seen as taking the “Lone Conservative Ranger” route. Being someone who is following this movement very closely, I can assure you that Thompson’s current supporters would jump ship the second we were even given a solid hint of Thompson running with McCain.

And as a former political consultant, I know it is customary for Thompson to drop a phone call to other GOP hopefuls before going public. It’s something they all do. Nothing new here.

In regards to your acting comment, perhaps you might want to look at his voting record. No acting there.

    Just some thoughts.

Dobson just lost most of his crediblity. In the long run Thompson is the winner. The left will not be able to say Thompson wants to establish a theocracy now will they?

Thompson may not want to run, but he certainly does not want to run VP. You are speculating and have nothing to base you thoughts on.
