A black day for the college campuses of America. The death toll has risen to at least 30 at this time. However the details are very sketchy. It doesn’t seem to be clear if there were two gunmen, or just one. The two shootings seem to be several hours apart.

You would think that someone who went on a rampage, would have had plenty of time to calm down between the initial 0715 incident at West Ambler Johnston, and then the second incident around 1000 at Norris Hall.

But then, I’ve never killed anyone. So I don’t know how fast you burn through your anger or how much adrenaline it takes to stay that pissed off. I’d just as soon not have to find out.

NBC’s Pete Williams said two law enforcement officials told him the gunman killed himself. They also said the gunman used two 9-mm handguns during the rampage, Williams reported. He said the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was trying to track the weapons.

The 9mm round is a popular round used in both Law Enforcement and by the US military. The 9mm round is smaller, and lighter than the standard .45 cal. This allows you to get ten 9mm bullets in the same space used by seven .45 cal.

You can expect a effective range of 152 feet from a 9mm pistol, and a clip size of no smaller than ten shots. Most pistols come with two clips, but purchasing additional clips is not difficult.

Like almost all pistol ammo, 9mm cartridges are sold in boxes of 50, and you will pay about $20 for a box.

I say this to bring about two points, the first being… when the press asks dumb questions like “How did he have that much ammo on him?”, you have to keep in mind that $60 will get you 150 shots of 9mm. That is NOT a lot of ammo. I’ve known guys who will shoot that off in a single target session without blinking.

And secondly… this is not an assault weapon. It would not of been effected one way or the other by the Clinton Gun Ban. This is a pistol, not a rifle. Firearms of all kinds are outlawed on the campus of Virginia Tech, however that didn’t stop this sick goblin from killing over 30 people.

Could the death toll from this goblin of been cut shorter if the students/teachers at Virginia Tech had the right to self-defense? From Captain Ed…

UPDATE VII: Via Instapundit, we find out that VT was a gun-free zone. A bill that would have allowed students and faculty to carry weapons failed in the Virginia Assembly.

Hog on Ice believes so, and I agree…

$25 will get you 100 rnds of .45 ACP Winchester White Box at Wally World, but I can only get off 29 rnds without reloading (4 seven rnd mags and one up the pipe), but that is enough to have cut this sonuvabitch in half….

I’m not a religious man, but times like this make me wish for a Hell for this bastards soul to roast in.

Gun free zones simply insure that any would be attacker has his pick of UNARMED VICTIMS.

Disarming victims is easier than going after criminals. According to economist John Lott, author of the landmark statistical study, More Guns, Less Crime, restrictive gun laws are directly linked to increased murder and rape rates. Lott studied the crime rates for all U.S. counties spanning an 18-year period. He found that the highest murder and rape rates were in the counties with the most restrictive gun laws, the second highest in those with less restrictive gun laws, and the lowest in those with “right to carry” laws, that is, where residents had a law – protected “right to carry” a personal firearm so long as he or she met certain minimum requirements.

Thirty one states now have “right to carry” laws, and all of them are experiencing dramatic declines in murder and rape since the laws were enacted. The statistics indicate that if the 29 states without “right to carry” laws were to adopt them, at least 1,000 murders and many thousands of rapes would be prevented every year.

    2 additional points SniperOne:

    1) We’re now hearing it was a 9mm and a .22LR handgun (not that anyone actually expected NBC to know what they were talking about when they incorrectly reported 2 9mm handguns). I’m guessing that the murderer was going for the cheaper, mass-marketed weapons. It was reported that most of the victims were shot 2-3 times. That would coincide with using a smaller caliber weapon.

    2) I don’t know about you, but 9mm is cheap ammo (because it is mass produced) — a box of 50 will cost you about $7-11 around these parts, not $20. And .22LR is even less expensive that 9mm.

And you’re right — when I go target shooting (at the local police range as a part of a university-sponsored program *surprise!*) I usually take 200-250 rounds. That lets me shoot for most of the 2 hours (concentrated practice, not plinking) and yet my wrists don’t hurt too much afterwards. So it’s not like this was an unusually large amount of ammo he had on hand.
