Abu Ayyub al-Masri, Leader Al Qaeda - Iraq, Suspected Dead
May 1, 2007 | By Sniper One |
In the tradition of terrorists leaders everywhere…
BAGHDAD — Iraqi officials have received reports that the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq was killed by Sunni tribesmen, but the chief government spokesman said Tuesday the information has not been confirmed.
The statement by spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh followed a welter of reports from other Iraqi officials that Abu Ayyub al-Masri had been killed. Iraqi officials have released similar reports in the past, only to acknowledge later they were inaccurate.
Until this is confirmed by Multi-National Forces -Iraq (MNF-I), it’s just a rumor; but if true it’s good news. The most interesting part of the news (to me) is that this is not a MNF-I raid, but that the result of local Iraqis vs Al Qaeda.
I hope this is a show of resolve by the local population against the terrorists. If so, it would give me continued hope for the Iraqi people.
Just don’t tell Harry Reid (D-NV); he doesn’t believe in progress.

Update:
The terrorist news network (Al Jazeera) reports that Al Qaeda is denying that Al-Masri is dead. Not that I would really expected Al Qaeda to admit if he was dead.
Only when MNF-I/Centcom says he’s dead will I believe what’s left of his body has really reached room temperature.
