Alabama Bloggers Carnival - 06/04
June 4, 2007 | By Sniper One |
Good Monday to everyone, and Welcome to the Alabama Blogger’s Carnival!
I’m pretty happy with the turnout we had this week.
First up, due the to the drought, Lake Martin is having issues…
(Lake Martin Voice) Lake Martin’s water level is low this year, and it could get even lower.
Alabama Power says that Lake Martin’s water level started dropping on May 18 and “could be much lower on July 4.”
It is no news flash that Alabama and much of the southeast has suffered a severe drought so far in 2007. This follows on the heels of a dry 2006. Since part of Lake Martin’s existence depends on it maintaining a certain level downstream, it has been affected.
The folks at Alabama Power are not optimistic: “most streams that feed our lakes are at the lowest levels ever recorded.”
Additionally, Lake Martin Voice is requesting Rain Dancers…
Second, we have Brian over at Flashpoint, who is rallying against amendment 1, which is a subsidy being given to ThyssenKrupp.
(Flashpoint) I would like to add that the current unemployment rate in Alabama is 3.3%, which is well below the national rate of 4.5% and is bordering on full employment. The most current unemployment rate in Mobile County, where the plant will be situated is 2.8% (Source: Alabama Department of Industrial Relations). Given those healthy employment statistics why should the state borrow an additional $400 million that will have to be repaid - with interest - with taxpayer money?
Remember to vote (tomorrow) on Tuesday June 5th.
Thirdly, we have Mad Cow, down at Degree of Madness on Immigration Reform:
(Degree Of Madness) The name-calling has kicked up a notch recently, the old “if you can’t attack the message, attack the messenger” ploy taking center stage in the illegal immigration debate.
I am a bigot, I am a xenophobe, I want to kill all the illegals, and I’m trying to scare people. That’s probably not a comprehensive list but it’ll do for now. I’m the first to admit my faults, and I have many, but I never realized I am a bigot, xenophobe, murderer, and a scary monster until now. I want to thank Senator Lindsey Graham, Linda Chavez, Michael Chertoff, and President Bush for educating me on these flaws in my character. Now I would like to return the favor.
According to Sen. Graham, Chavez, Chertoff, and Bush… you and I are in the same bigoted, xenophobic boat. All I can say is that I couldn’t wish for better company.
From Scott Alan’s World, we find that there is continued rivalry between the Red Sox and the Yankees…
(Scott Alan’s World) Red Sox vs. Yankees this weekend! This is going to be a great series. The Yankees are completely out of the playoffs on June 1. Jason Giambi might be out for the season. Arod (not what I normally call him) was caught sneaking around on his wife and his boyfriend Jeter with a stripper from Vegas named Joslyn Noel Morse.
All I can say, is that if she rain dances, she should apply for a job over at Lake Martin Voice.
Speaking of rivalries heating up… At least when Alabama beats Auburn (or vice versa), nobody gets their hands chopped off. I guess Al Qaeda takes the phrase, “It’s all fun and games still someone loses an eye”, way too literally.
(7.62mm Justice) MAY 24–In a recent raid on an al-Qaeda safe house in Iraq, U.S. military officials recovered an assortment of crude drawings depicting torture methods like “blowtorch to the skin” and “eye removal.” Along with the images, which you’ll find on the following pages, soldiers seized various torture implements, like meat cleavers, whips, and wire cutters. Photos of those items can be seen here.
Content Warning on the links from the 7.62mm Justice blog posting…
On to lighter topics, a monster pig was killed recently; and no, it wasn’t Rosie O’Donnell.
(Frankly, My Dear…) The “wild” pig that was shot by the 11 yr old really does exist and got that big from a pampered diet from the original owners. His name was Fred and he was a Christmas present as a piglet to the man’s wife a couple of years ago. He was gentle enough that they let their grandkids play with him.
Alas, poor Fred has gone from pet, to breakfast.
This is our first post from Frankly, My Dear… so go over and give them a big Alabama Bloggers welcome!
Our Improper Carnival Mistress wouldn’t be doing her job if she didn’t submit something, and she says that Cancer Sucks!
(Alabama Improper) My grandfather died of cancer. What kind escapes me right now and does it really matter what kind it was….it was cancer. I’m sure you can tell me about one of your loved ones who is, or was, afflicted with this hideous disease as well.
GM Roper has formed an Army of Bloggers and what better way to use the blogosphere than to help fight cancer, in all of its nastiness. Or at least throw down a challenge to start; take some action. Something. Anything.
Fellow Vigilant Freedom/910 Group member, Maccus Germanis, talks about talking Islam.
(ForlornHope) I have been in a public place (recently Jim ‘N’ Nicks) on Thurs evenings in order to discuss islam since it was first suggested by Dag. (who can be found posting with other blue revolution sympathizers at Covenant Zone. )
Last night madcow, pilgrim, an as yet blogless infidel, and I met last night and discussed the purpose for our meeting. It is true that cars parked in Alabama have a remarkably fireproof quality. And that muslims that can be met here are often unfailingly polite. None of that changes what islam fundamentally is or how it has revealed itself to others that are not so fortunate to live in Alabama. I do not speak only of what might be considered the muslim world, but also France, Denmark, Sweden, and Dearborn, Michigan.
More about the Vigilant Freedom/910 Group…
Lastly, but not least… We have the Bull Speaks discussing the Army’s need to move from the lighter and more feminine 9mm they are currently using to the trusted and proven .45 ACP man-stoppers.
(The Bull Speaks) This is not the first time that the U.S. Army has found that their new sub-caliber sidearms to be less-than-adequate in a fire fight with determined enemies. The first time was in the Philippines when the Army .38’s failed miserably and lead to the re-issue of the .45 Colt revolvers. Most folk think that the weapon issued was the 1911 .45 ACP. Wrong! It was the venerable .45 Colt, sometimes erroneously called the .45 Long Colt, in the single action Colt Peacemaker. With the advent of the model 1911 the military had everything it could ever ask for: A fine, tough, reliable semi-auto sidearm chambered for a powerful round of proper caliber, (i.e.: anything starting with a “4″…), the good ol’ .45 Automatic Colt Pistol.
Being a 1911 owner and .45ACP shooter, I agree completely with the Bull.
So Ladies and Gentlemen, that’s this weeks edition of the Alabama Bloggers Carnival. I hope ya’ll had as much fun with it as I did.
