He sat back and saw all that was good,
He saw things to be as they should.
Just one more blessing He had in store;
He created a mother, but whatever for?

He knew a mother would have a special place
to shine His reflection on her child’s face.
A mother will walk the extra mile
just to see her children smile.

She’ll work her fingers to the bone
to make a house into a home.
A mother is there to teach and guide,
a mother will stay right by your side.

She’ll be there through your pain and strife,
she’ll stay constant in your life.
will keep her word; will never tell.

A mother never pokes or pries
but stands quietly by your side,
giving you the strength you need,
You share a love that knows no end,
you’re more than my mother,
you are my friend.

It occupies 140 acres and has 70,000 panels. It was constructed by the SunPower Corporation, and produces a maximum rated 14 MW which is approximately 25 % of the power requirements for Nellis AFB.

This photograph was taken by Senior Airman Larry E Reid Jr. as part of his official duties and is in the public domain.

Before we actually start with this I would like to point out that the cost of producing electricity using Solar energy is four to five times that of conventional coal. There are people who still scoff at this even after it has been explained to them because the perception is that sunlight is free, and because of that so should any power generated by using the light and heat of the Sun.
To offer a point of comparison, I’d like again to explain the cost of a large 2000MW baseload nuclear power plant. After planning and approvals, the day one cost as the first sod is turned might be around four and a half billion dollars, but the plant does not produce power for at least seven years, so at the going interest rate for the loan, the cost escalates by a further 225 million a year, hence by the time it comes on line feeding power into the grid and actually earning money, that original cost has blown out to almost six and a half billion dollars, so the expense is not due to the plant itself but because of the cost of money.
The same applies for solar power. There is a huge up front cost, again exacerbated by the cost of money.

So, the complexity and vagaries of each method of producing electrical power differ in ways not actually related to the process itself.

So even though you can lay on the beach, and be warmed (and even burned) by the Sun for no cost, it is entirely different when it comes to producing power from that same warming Sun.

Photovoltaic Solar Power.

I mentioned in the previous post about the solar panels on the roof of a house. This is the photovoltaic method of power production.
The light of the Sun shines on small cells. The cells are made typically of Silicon because of the number of free electrons in that atoms outer shell. The light makes those electrons move around faster thus generating electricity, and believe me, this is the simplified version for ease of understanding. Selenium is also used, as is Boron and Phosphorous. The atoms of each of these elements share electrons thus generating the electrical power. Small plates made from each of the elements are sandwiched together, with minute electrical wiring connections joining the plates. Hundreds and sometimes thousands of these cells are then connected together to form solar panels. The panels are encased to hold them together and covered with toughened glass on the front. When you look at the photograph of the house with the panels on the roof, you’ll see there are thirty of those panels typically sized approximately six feet by four feet.

Now you have some idea of the cost, taken up completely in the intricacy of their construction, and the time it takes to complete that construction and the materials involved and their conversion into the cells and then the panels.
That large household version in the photograph costs around $45,000 or so. It might supply your household power, but when the Sun goes down, the house needs to draw its electricity from the grid, as there is no way to store the Solar power generated in this manner.
The advantage of a large system like this is that during the day while the family is away at work and school and the Sun is shining, the generated power is being fed back into the grid, and as incentive, Governments offer attractive rebates for this, sometimes three times the cost BACK TO you as a consumer.
So, you use power during the day, some is fed to the grid, and you use power from the grid at night. Typical savings might amount to half your power bill, and with the rebate, that again takes some off the total. Assuming that you’re saving half, and getting the rebate, then the return might be as high as 80% of your yearly power bill. A typical household bill here in Australia might be $2500 per annum, averaged. I know that you in the US have typically higher charges for your power. The savings for that Australian family might be in the vicinity of $2000 per year. So, to recover the cost of the System $45,000, you’ll need to live at that house for 20 or so years, because you can’t take it with you if you move house.
Selling the house might attract a higher price because it has the system, but there is conjecture on that point, even though the system might make up as much as 10% of the cost of the house and land for the seller, but if he actually achieves the return for the system, it is again a matter unrelated to environmental concerns.

On the larger scale, you see the huge initial outlay for the panels, the infrastructure just to connect all those panels, together, to have them articulated so they track with the Sun for best effect. By their nature, they are exposed to the elements, hence rain and dust. If it rains then dust adheres to the glass. The glass covered panels have to be perfectly clean to operate at their optimum, so someone has to constantly clean the panels, sometimes up to 70,000 for a large array, adding to the ongoing cost for the manhours element. The power generated is DC so it all has to converted to AC for feeding into the grid, hence large inverters are needed with step up transformers as well.
Now you can see the cost mounting.
The huge initial outlay, and the resultant cost of money, the cost of the vast infrastructure, the ongoing costs now all add up, making solar power one of the most expensive forms of production.

However the big thing that scares owners of these power stations is that as soon as a cloud just scuds across the face of the Sun, production goes down by as much as 25 % immediately, and then takes time to build back up, so on cloudy days, power is minimal, and now you can see why this form of photovoltaic power cannot be used as constant, reliable set level baseload power.

This photograph is of part of the array at the Serpa Power Station in Portugal. It totals 52,000panel modules, and covers a hillside over an area of 150 acres. The panels were constructed by SunPower, Sanyo and Sharp, and track to follow the Sun. It produces a maximum of 11MW.

Click on the photo for a larger image in a new window.

This photograph was taken by Aurelio A Heckert and is a commons photograph in the public domain.

Having taken all those factors into account, there are still large power stations using this photovoltaic principle.
The US is the third largest user of this type of power on the Planet, so it’s not like the US is addicted to coal. There really are engineers out there doing this sort of work.
Germany and Japan lead the World in use of this form of power, and Spain is also a large user.

There are advances in this form of power production concentrating the voltage to heat oil which boils water to steam to drive a turbine.
In Australia, construction is underway to bring on line the largest photovoltaic power plant on Earth. It will produce a maximum of 154 MW and will supply up to 50,000 homes. It combines the solar panels in arrays, but uses heliostats also, tracking mirrors that follow the path of the Sun, and designed so that they concentrate light onto the panels vastly increasing power production from each panel. The cost is close to $450 million for a relatively small 154 MW maximum. (degraded because of the nature of its variability)

As more solar panels are constructed and then be used for arrays, the cost will become cheaper, but because of the variability of the light, then this form of power generation can really only make up a minor fraction of the overall pie chart, and if renewables can only make up 20% at best, then the Solar part of that shrinks somewhat.

If you follow some of the links, you’ll see from the maps that solar power might only be economically viable in that Sun belt, and in Southern States of the US and most probably those in the South West.

The problem however will always be the high cost of the manufacture of the panels, the infrastructure needed to connect them all, and the fact that the Sun sets every night for almost half the time that power is needed..
So, when environmentalists point to this as the way of the future, it will only ever be a small part of the solution.

The next post will detail the third part of the solar equation, that of Solar Thermal, which might be the most promising aspect of the whole Solar story.

Merry Pranksters
2008 Darwin Awards Nominee
Unconfirmed by Darwin

The Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it.

The telephone company was replacing above-ground telephone lines with buried lines. In one sparsely populated farming area, if lines crossed a country road they would dig a trench halfway across, so rural traffic could continue through. Then they would fill in the trench, and dig a trench on the other side. One morning, local farmers called the sheriff to report a smashed-up pickup. Inside were two ranch hands who were last seen the previous night, heading home after last call. You see…

On their way to the bars, the men had decided to play a prank. They stopped their pickup, and moved the flashing warning signs from the trenched side to the good side of the country road. Crime scene analysis later confirmed that they were the culprits who moved the flashing stands. Investigations also revealed that at the time of the accident, they were driving at an excessive speed with an impressive amount of alcohol in their systems.

No crime scene
analysis is capable of determining whether the ranch hands forgot their prank, or chose to see what would happen if they hit that trench at a high rate of speed in the middle of the night.

No good prank goes unpunished.

Some of you may have visited the NASA site and seen those ingenious little NASA Mars Rovers tooling around on the surface of Mars. I mentioned in the first piece how England was a World Power for so long because they led the World in virtually every facet of human endeavour.
Well those two Mars Rovers should give every American reason to be proud. They landed on Mars, each with a three month time frame to work to. They use solar panels to generate a tiny voltage to drive the wheels, operate the camera, and the small computer system and transmitter/receiver to digitise any photographs and send them back to Earth. They are radio controlled, in a manner similar to those little model cars and planes you may see.
The problem with travelling to a place as close, and yet so distant at Mars is the speed factor, so the idea is to calculate the travel when Mars is at its closest, a distance of 36 million miles, and not when it is at its most distant of 240 million miles.
Space travel is restricted by the time taken, and this can only be achieved by using the technology we have available right now. The maximum speed we can reach is around 17,000MPH which is the velocity required to escape the Earth’s gravitational pull. Once in the vacuum of space there is no way (yet) to accelerate hence that terminal speed is about the maximum. Any increase is of a minor nature. That means that the time taken to physically travel to Mars is around 85 to 90 days when Mars is at its closest.
However, any information transmitted by radio travels at the speed of light, so at it’s closest, any signal only takes two and half minutes to travel to Mars, now gradually increasing as Mars moves further away from Earth.
So, the guy actually driving those little Mars Rovers has to watch the camera out front, calculate the small speed with respect to distance travelled and anticipate how far in advance he needs to be changing direction.
This US ingenuity sees those Rovers still moving around relatively trouble free four years after they arrived on Mars for a three month main mission, hoping they might get a little more out of them. One has even racked up travel of nearly ten miles, which is incredible when you really think of it. Any maintenance has to be carried out from an incredible distance, hoping against hope that it actually works.

Now, why I mentioned this at all with respect to the settlement of Australia, is I want you to consider a hypothetical.
Let’s pretend that those Mars Rovers found the surface was indeed able to support human life in a normal manner as on Earth, there was water freely available, and the air was okay to breathe normally. (Incidentally none of which is true, but after all it is only a hypothetical)
Excited, people back here on Earth mount an expedition. Clean out nearly a thousand people from the jails around the country, some basic tools and shoot em off to Mars with best wishes, tasking them with setting up a viable settlement.
Absolutely impossible to even consider in this day and age.

In 1788, the situation was exactly the same as the perception of settling Mars might be today.

English jails creaked under the weight of prisoners, most of whom committed misdemeanours that would hardly warrant a fine these days.
The American War of Independence was lost (depending on whose side you were on) and now the English had nowhere to exile their prisoners to.

In 1786 the English Government decided to actually send people to The Great Southern Continent discovered by Cook sixteen years previously. This was basically to serve two purposes. The first was to explore the possibility of using it as a dumping ground for prisoners, and the second to set up a colony there before any of the other countries did so, namely, the French.
The details were worked out about how to proceed. The expedition was to take enough supplies to hopefully tide them over for two years, but in the main, it was all just guesswork. The bulk of the work was to be done by the captive work force, namely the convicts themselves, with Marines to guard them, an administrative element and no private citizen settlers at all.
Two Royal Navy vessels were provided for the escort and the administrative people and nine further ships were hired by the Government for the transport of the convicts, ships specially fitted out for the task, a forerunner of the slave traders.
It’s not like going on a cruise when you turn up at the ship the day prior to leaving port.
Some of the convicts were actually on board the transports for up to seven months prior to departure. In that interim, seventeen convicts died, and some actually reached their release date or were freed
.
For a perspective as to the size of the ships, step out 40 paces, the distance of two ordinary house frontages. That was the longest of the eleven ships, roughly the size of a harbour ferry.

The man chosen to lead the fleet was a full Naval Captain the fifty year old Arthur Phillip.
This choice was somewhat out of the blue really, as others were eminently more qualified. Why Phillip was chosen is that he led a fleet of convicts from Portugal to Brazil, convict transportation not the sole province of the English. Phillip had a remarkably low death rate of convicts during that voyage, and this could be the reason behind his choice, borne out when later fleets had significantly higher death rates for the voyage.

On Sunday 13th May 1787, at three o’clock in the morning those eleven ships sailed out of Portsmouth Harbour for the journey to Botany Bay on the other side of the planet, the furthest place away from home that there was. On board those eleven ships were the Marine Guards numbering 213, 27 of them with their wives, and with 19 children. There was Phillip himself with his staff, servants, doctors, a judge, a chaplain and a surveyor. The ships themselves totalled 443 men as masters, officers and crew. Then there were the convicts themselves, 778 in all made up of 586 men and 192 women. These convicts were mostly chained between decks for the journey, excepting time they were allowed on deck to exercise.

They were chained to the side of the ship …………… FOR EIGHT MONTHS.

All up, on eleven tiny ships, there was close 1500 people.

They sailed to the island of Teneriffe, then on to Rio de Janeiro, and from there across to The Cape Of Good Hope, the site of modern day Capetown. The longest part of the journey lay ahead in the run across to Australia, a trip of approximately eight weeks.
Captain Arthur Phillip was aboard HMS Sirius and at the Cape, he decided to transfer to the smaller and speedier HMS Supply, hoping to make it to Botany Bay sooner than the rest of the fleet, scout out the land and find a good place to come ashore and set up.
As it turned out, the Sirius arrived on the 18th January 1788, the next three ships a day later, and the remaining ships a further day later.
Phillip was not really enamoured with Cook’s recommendation of Botany Bay, and he decided it as being unsuitable. He left the fleet at anchor in Botany Bay, and set off to find a place more suitable. Not much further to the North was the entrance to a harbour that Cook noted but did not enter. Phillip sailed through the Heads into a harbour he described as ‘one of the finest harbours in the World.’ He scouted the harbour for two days and found an excellent place to come ashore and start a settlement. He sailed back to Botany Bay, and the Fleet moved to the small cove inside the Harbour. Phillip, some marines and a small group of convicts were the first ashore. A tree was felled and shaped into a flagpole and Phillip officially raised the Ensign on the 26th January 1788, a day celebrated each year as Australia Day.
He named the place Sydney Cove in honour of the man who dreamed up this hare brained scheme. This was at Port Jackson in what is now known as Sydney Harbour, and the site was where Sydney stands today.

The most outstanding thing to come out of this voyage was that during those eight months at sea, Phillip only lost 23 convicts, an incredibly small percentage that was not approached for decades to follow, proving Phillip to be a humanitarian, as well as a truly great navigator.

Remember the Mars hypothetical at the top of the article. All those people arrive on Mars, and find that they need something to keep them going. The send a request back to the Earth which takes around three minutes to arrive. The missing piece can then be sent to Mars aboard a relief craft, and that might take a further four months to arrive at Mars.

With this first fleet at Sydney Cove, if they need something, then the return message goes back aboard the return journey of the ship taking 8 months, and after that message arrives, the return trip takes a further eight months, so basically, if they needed something from Home, it took two years to arrive.
It may just be easier to colonise Mars than it was for these people to colonise a place on the other side of our own Planet, literally sailing off into the unknown.

Your calls and faxes this week are creating quite the stir on the Hill — UPDATE on SAVE campaign

UPDATE NO. 1: We’ve added another signer of the SAVE Discharge Petition — Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.) Three cheers for NumbersUSA activists in Indiana!

UPDATE NO. 2: That makes 188 signers. We now need only 30 more to force a House vote on the SAVE Act [H.R. 4088] to start driving perhaps a million illegal aliens home each year!

UPDATE NO. 3: Your faxes and phone calls this week have overwhelmed many offices. NumbersUSA is getting a lot of complaints from harried congressional staffers begging us to make the phone calls and faxes stop. We tell them that we will be more than happy to make a halt — as soon as their boss signs the SAVE Discharge Petition. I told you Monday that many offices were saying their Members felt no pressure to sign the SAVE Discharge Petition because they said they were hearing very little support from the voters. I think you all are starting to change their minds about that!

UPDATE NO. 4: You sent 77,905 faxes into congressional offices on Wednesday. That was after 174,922 faxes on Tuesday, the day that the House Social Security subcommittee tried to kill the SAVE Act with a string of right-wing industry lobbyists and left-wing open-border groups at a hearing. You put everybody on notice that they are being watched and that large numbers of voters don’t like their efforts to allow outlaw businesses to continue to hire illegal aliens.

PLEASE TAKE THIS ACTION — NO. 1: Make sure that you have sent all the faxes posted for you on your customized Action Buffet corkboard. It is essential that congressional offices see their fax machines continue to churn out pro-SAVE appeals every day.

AND TAKE THIS ACTION — NO. 2: Every time you see an email from NumbersUSA, please open it. Most will have links for new faxes and other actions you can take to keep the pressure on to improve enforcement this year against illegal immigration.

AND THIS ACTION — NO. 3: Call as many offices as possible on our list of U.S. Representatives who are refusing to sign the Discharge Petition. The Members are listed by state. You may want to concentrate on Members from your state and from neighboring states or from areas with which you have some special connection. Of course, the most influential call is always to your own Representative.

202-224-3121

AND ONE MORE — NO. 4: If your own Representative is on that list of NON-signers, please forward this email around to everybody you know in your home area with a note telling them that their Member of Congress is standing in the way of the only chance we have this year of taking jobs away from illegal aliens and pushing them to go home.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU CALL

Simply express your disappointment that the Representative is refusing to sign the “Discharge Petition on the SAVE Act — H.R. 4088.” Note that the Discharge Petition is the only way to bring immigration enforcement to the floor of the House this year and that by NOT signing, the Representative is siding with outlaw businesses and protecting their ability to continue to hire illegaL aliens instead of American workers. Or give some other reason why the non-signing is harmful.

It is as simple as that. Say “thank you” and hang up.

The main argument these offices will give you is that E-Verify relies on a Social Security database that has lots of errors and, thus, large numbers of American citizens will lose their jobs through mistakes.

You should tell the congressional staffers that Democratic Rep. Heath Shuler from North Carolina testified Tuesday that while E-Verify has been in voluntary use for a decade, the government is unaware of a single instance of an American citizen losing a job because of it.

Yes, there are mistakes in the database, but those are mistakes that the worker needs to clear up anyway. Once a worker is run through E-Verify and notified that there is a match problem, the worker is given time correct the record. Only illegal aliens are unable to correct the record — and they DO lose their jobs.

SOMETHING SPECIAL IN INDIANA

I want to especially praise our Indiana activists who now have persuaded all four of the state’s Republican Representatives to sign the Discharge Petition (Souder, Burton, Buyer and Pence) and also two of the 10 Democrats from the entire nation (Ellsworth and Donnelly).

It would be tough to gain a clean sweep for Indiana, but keep the pressure on Democrats Hill, Carson and Visclosky.

WHEN YOUR REPRESENTATIVE SEEMS HOPELESSLY NEGATIVE …

I know that many of you get very discouraged while repeatedly contacting your U.S. Representative and always getting negative responses. You often ask me why you should continue to try at all.

It is true that many of these Members are unlikely to ever be our champions, or even warrant a B or A grade. But it really is helpful to continue to pound these kind of opponents. Even if they don’t vote our way, they may behind the scenes ask their Party leadership to just let Heath Shuler get a vote on his bill. We are trying to wear down the opposition, as well as put some fright into them — and occasionally inform the ones who have the slightest interest in the facts.

THANKS FOR KEEPING THE FIRE HOT UNDER THE PROTECTORS OF OUTLAW BUSINESSES AND THEIR ILLEGAL FOREIGN WORKERS,

SOLAR POWER (Part One)

Unlike what environmentalists might say, generating electrical power from the heat generated by Sunlight is more complex than you might think. Because of this I’m going to split it into three parts, household generated electrical power, Photovoltaic power, and solar thermal power. As good as it sounds, solar can never be classed as reliable, for the obvious day/night reason, and for those of you living in Northern areas of the US, it is almost out of the question, because there will be times in Winter when snow will cover any solar panels that might rely on the Sun, and the Sun may barely be seen during some times of the year, so even if solar power can be used on a sporadic basis, it can never supply continuous power on a 24 hour basis all year round.

Household Generated.

1. Solar Hot Water.

This photograph shows a roof mounted solar powered hot water system indicative of what you might see on Australian households.

Photograph courtesy of the Solahart Company.

This link takes you to the home page. You’ll see the menu tab beneath the top image, The second one along titled ‘HOME OWNERS’ has a drop down menu with further excellent information.

Australia, you might think, would be the perfect place for the introduction of solar power. In fact, one Company here in Australia has been installing Solar Hot Water Systems in homes for more than 50 years, and they have the system working perfectly.
They have three systems, one with the tank on the roof with the panel, one with just the panel on the roof, and the third with no panel but a thermal system that draws heat from the surrounding air to warm a liquid that converts to a pressurised gas that heats the water. The first two with the panel on the roof pass water over the panel to a trough at the bottom of the panel on the down side of a sloping roof, where the water then is drawn back up as heat naturally rises back to the tank at the top.
The systems save that part of your power bill for hot water. These systems had a boom period in Australia during the Seventies probably due to ‘new fangled’ factor, and those people who installed them at that time have had the long term benefit of the installed systems, provided they have stayed in those homes for all this time. They have come back into vogue recently for all the obvious reasons, and sales are booming so much that other Companies have now moved into supply and installation of them.
Governments have even made it attractive for people to install them by offering rebates, but you can guess what’s happened. The companies gradually raised the price to cover the rebate, so in effect the consumer was still paying the same as he always had, and the Government rebate was going straight to the Company.
The cost averages from $1500 for a small system say for just a 2 person household to $5000 for a family sized system. For an average electric power bill the saving might amount to between a fifth and a quarter of your total bill, so the system could effectively pay for itself over five to six years or so, depending on the government rebate. The possible drawback is what happens during Winter or if you have a period of cloudy days. The system has had a long time now to be perfected and it works quite well, provided you live in a year round sunny place, and not anywhere North of the Mason Dixon line.

2. Solar Generated Power.

My son who was eleven at the time saved some money from his pocket money and bought me a solar powered calculator from Radio Shack for my birthday in 1981. I still have it now and it gets used quite often. It uses the photovoltaic principle in that it works when light shines on the small panel, whereas the solar hot water principle works on dark panels soaking up the heat from the sun and using this heat to warm water for the hot water system.
With the calculator, light from the Sun or any light source generates a tiny voltage which works the calculator, as long as the light is shining on the panel.
This method of Solar generated Power works via the same principle.
Even though with both, you have panels on the roof of your house, the two systems are different.
The inherent problem some of you may be unaware of is that this photovoltaic system produces DC, and all houses are wired for AC, so a way has to be found to convert from the light generated DC. This is done with an inverter.
You cannot have enough panels on your roof to generate enough power to solely run a normal household.
Whereas the hot water system has a panel that is around eight feet by six feet, this photovoltaic system utilises a number of panels of approximately half that size. Each panel is made up of hundreds of the small solar cells, whereas the calculator uses four thumbnail sized cells.
The problem is that the system has to be wired into existing house wiring, connecting it to the main power grid.

The basic system combines an Inverter and the six panels and might be able to produce just over one Killowatt, which could run the hot water, or with no hot water then a refrigerator, some light bulbs and maybe the radio. The oven would be a stretch, as would the cooktop. Heating and airconditioning are out of the question as the average one and a half horsepower reverse cycle airconditioner uses about 1.2 KW. That is why it can only be used to augment the household power from the grid.
The cost starts at around $4000 for the basic outfit, and can go as high as $45,000.

This photograph shows a top of the line solar power array on the roof of a house. This might feasibly generate up to 5.12 KW of power augment the grid supply to an average house.

Photograph courtesy of the Braemac Company.

This link shows the available systems this large Australian Company offers. take further links for each system in those tabs highlighted in blue. All prices are in Australian Dollars.

The larger cost here is the top of the range system, that can produce up to 5KW, which, at a pinch, might be enough to power a house, as long as you can live relatively frugally with regard to electrical power. The idea here is that this is an excellent supplement to your house being connected to the grid, which is a legal requirement, and during sunny periods can feed power back to the grid resulting in a payment from the power authority, which in the long run could prove revenue neutral for household power bills. The inherent problem here is that the house would need to be specifically designed with a large roof area facing North here in Australia, and South in the US, in an area of fairly benign if not hot weather, and at $45,000, it is a commitment to staying in that house for a long period of time, before you recover the cost of the original outlay.

Some Governments subsidise the original cost to a small degree, but the same might also apply here in that the Company will just bump up the price to cover that rebate, so either way, you pay the same. Some governments have also made the attractive offer of paying you for the power the system generates and feeds back into the grid if you are not using it. It sounds puzzling, but if both members of the family work and the children are at school, no one is home. If it’s a bright sunny day, then power is being generated but not used, and what actually happens is that your power meter actually winds backwards as the power is fed back into the grid. Some Governments actually pay double or even triple if this happens. However, the house need to be rewired by an Electrician, and the labour is in addition to the initial outlay, and a special power meter is required to read that ‘backwards’ factor.

So, as attractive as it might seem, the returns are only minimal with an absolute maximum saving on your power bill amounting to not much more than a quarter. In some areas this might in fact be a lot, but you have to weigh up the facts if you are living in Michigan, Texas or Southern California.

The next two pieces I will deal with basically the same principle, only scaled up, the household hot water system being Solar thermal, and the photovoltaic on a large scale.

Thanks to Steve Plaut for more proofs of the Fallacy of “Palestinians”.

Quotes from Steven Plaut

A primer on propaganda

Over the past few years, the term nakba (also spelled naqba) has become the favorite nonsense word of the Anti-Israel Lobby. Meaning “catastrophe” in Arabic, it has been embraced by anti-Semites all over the planet to refer to Israel’s creation, which supposedly imposed a “catastrophe” upon the “disenfranchised Palestinian Arabs.”…

There are tons of Google, Yahoo & other links referring to this word and most are erroneously linking it to the current Radical Islamist’s Propaganda about Israel!

The approximate borders of the British Mandate circa 1922.

… The term was not invented in 1948 but rather in 1920. And it was coined not because of Palestinians suddenly getting nationalistic but because Arabs living in Palestine regarded themselves as Syrian and were enraged at being cut off from their Syrian homeland. …

We have been writing about this umteen times - Please Read my lips:
THERE IS NO SUCH THING (PERSON) AS A PALESTINIAN!!!!
It’s a CON JOB on the GULLIBLE PEOPLE of this World!
Did you get that??? Do I need to repeat it?

The problem was that the Palestinian Arabs saw themselves as Syrians and were seen as such by other Syrians. The Palestinian Arabs were enraged that an artificial barrier was being erected within their Syrian homeland by the infidel colonial powers - one that would divide northern Syrian Arabs from southern Syrian Arabs, the latter being those who were later misnamed “Palestinians.”

See I TOLD YA SO!!!

The bulk of the Palestinian Arabs had in fact migrated to Palestine from Syria and Lebanon during the previous two generations, largely to benefit from the improving conditions and job opportunities afforded by Zionist immigration and capital flowing into the area. In 1920, both sets of Syrian Arabs, those in Syria and those in Palestine, rioted violently and murderously.

The Jewish people improved the Land, worked hard to bring Prosperity to a Desolate Region. Just as they have done over the Centuries to all the Countries they have lived. They have been a Blessing to the Countries where they resided. Just like it says in the Bible. Of course this would attract neighboring Arabs or anyone seeking to better themselves.

Palestinian Arabs are no more a nation and no more entitled to their own state than are the Arabs of Detroit or of Paris.

Now will all you “Bleeeding Heart” Liberals finally understand that you have been made an ASS of by the Radical Islamists???

The following quote comes from the great-grandfather of the current Syrian dictator, Bashar Assad:

“Those good Jews brought civilization and peace to the Arab Muslims, and they dispersed gold and prosperity over Palestine without damage to anyone or taking anything by force. Despite this, the Muslims declared holy war against them and did not hesitate to massacre their children and women…. Thus a black fate awaits the Jews and other minorities in case the Mandates are cancelled and Muslim Syria is united with Muslim Palestine.”

That statement is from a letter sent to the French prime minister in June 1936 by six Syrian Alawi notables (the Alawis are the ruling class in Syria today) in support of Zionism. Bashar’s great-grandfather was one of them.

You see the MAJORITY of Muslims do NOT agree with the Radical, MURDEROUS Islamists, even then as well as today.
I’m SHOUTING these explanations so you can hear me over all the Noise & Distraction in your Life!

[Bold and Italic Emphasis are mine. ---Al]

This portrait was painted by Nathaniel Dance in 1775, and hangs in The National Maritime Museum at Greenwich in the United Kingdom.

So then, just what is the tenuous link between lawyers and the founding of Australia?

Shakespeare talked of lawyers in Henry VI written in 1591.

Back then, in England, the Law wasn’t like it is today. There was no four year course at University. There was no spending time as a gopher an articled clerk, then as a Solicitor. There was no Bar exam on the step to becoming a Barrister. No long wait then to become a Senior Counsel, (or Queens Counsel, as they are still often called in British Commonwealth Countries, the process of taking silk, if you are a fan of that English BBC TV program, Rumpole of the Bailey) There were no partners, no senior partners, no advocates, no district Attorneys, no Defence lawyers. No hundreds of bound case books along the walls of each Practice.

No the law just consisted of Magistrates schooled in Laws enacted by Parliament. Private lawyers were pretty scarce on the ground in those days, and virtually their sole work came from those in the upper class able to afford their skills. Hence the saying, one law for the rich and another for the poor. Those upper classes who (if ever) got into trouble could afford a lawyer who would get them out of that trouble. There was very little even in the way of a middle class, mostly merchants, also able to afford a lawyer schooled in the Law to also get them off. However, the vast bulk of humanity were the lower classes, and their access to the law was non existent.

If arrested, or even just accused of anything petty, then the case was that they were guilty. The job of the Magistrate was to hear the outline of the accusation, and then pass judgment as the sitting judge. They got through hundreds of cases a day. There was no such thing as a defence. You could say nothing in the Court, be it in your defence, or anything at all. The only thing the judge may have heard was if there was someone to speak on behalf of the accused, and that was a rare thing indeed, and also rare that it had any effect on the outcome or sentence. It was a case of lead in the accused, and take down the guilty person.

Petty crime was harshly dealt with, and there were jail terms for virtually everything, and not just seven days, but years for something as trivial as stealing a loaf of bread, or, as a female servant, stealing a handkerchief from her employer. The most trivial of misdemeanour’s drew harsh jail terms.

Capital punishment was prevalent, and not only just for the serious crime of murder, but for a lot lesser crimes as well. Male. Female. It mattered little. These were gruesome times with gruesome punishments, so even though England was the leading civilisation on the Planet, they were not very civilised at all.

Because of this jails bulged at the seams, literally, and because most sentences were to a term in jail, then there was no real turnover of prisoners. They just built more jails.
Still prisoner population increased. In 1718, new laws were passed and a new punishment was introduced, that of transportation, effectively exile. The reason behind this was to move the problem of housing prisoners offshore, effectively attempting to solve the problem of housing the prisoners in England, and assisting in those far off lands under the overarching authority of Mother England. Prisoners sentenced to transportation were shipped off to America, and sold as indentured servants. Over the next 58 years more than 60,000 prisoners were brought to America, mostly serving in Virginia and Maryland. Some actually returned to England but the vast majority stayed and started new lives in America following the finish of their sentence.
In 1775 at the height of your War Of Independence, with things starting to go badly for England, the writing on the wall, the transportation of prisoners ceased.
Even with transportation on a scale like this jails still bulged as the justice system concentrated more on punishment than justice.

To this end jails still creaked at the seams. Because America no longer accepted prisoners another means of housing prisoners was needed. The practice of the prison ‘Hulks’ came into being starting in 1775, old sailing ships gutted with superstructures removed, and anchored in harbours around the Country and most in the River Thames in mid London. The hulks remained in service till the mid 1850’s, and all up, there were 60 of them, housing tens of thousands of prisoners during those 70 or so years.

The hulks were established at Woolwich and at other ports in the 1770s to accommodate the burgeoning prison population. Prisoners either served their time on the hulks or waited to be transported to Botany Bay in Australia.

In 1766, leading Astronomers in England wanted to observe the transit of Venus across the Sun in 1769, and the best place to do this was in the South Seas.
A renowned mariner James Cook was tasked with the job, departing in 1768 for the three year voyage. Incidentally, as part of this voyage, Cook rigorously tested the new version of James Harrison’s clock the H4, proving beyond doubt that this was the conclusive answer to accurate time keeping in aid of navigation, once and for all solving the problem of longitude. The planetary observations were somewhat inconclusive, but the voyage was notable in that Cook finally discovered and proved the existence of the ‘Great Southern Continent’, often guessed about but never really found. He was the first to land on, and then chart the Eastern sea board of the Continent, a task that took nearly 5 months. He claimed the Continent for England on the 22nd August 1770.

This photograph is of that K1 watch, a copy of the Harrison H4 that Cook used extensively on this voyage. It may look like a pocket watch but this was the result of 50 years of hard work by Harrison. It measures just over 5 inches across and weighs just over 3 pounds. Its cost at the time was 600 Pounds Sterling, the equivalent in today’s money of $1.8 Million. Proving conclusively that this was the answer to the problem of Longitude, Harrison was awarded the prize of 20,000 Pounds Sterling, the equivalent of $6 Million today.

The war in North America went the way of the Americans, the first major loss for the English in their history, extended in the fight by being across the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Back in England, the loss of the War meant that America was now off the list of places to transport prisoners.
The jails bulged, as did the inhumane hulks, a place where prisoners were chained to the sides of the ship on decks where a man could not stand without having to stoop. During daylight hours prisoners worked ashore, but at night they were chained in the dark in conditions barely even imaginable.

Something was needed drastically as a place to house the increasing population of prisoners as even hardened English authorities perceived the draconian conditions of these hulks as only a stopgap means of housing the prisoners.

Eyes shifted to the other side of the planet to a place claimed on behalf of England more than a decade previously, and plans were raised to colonise this ‘Great Southern Land’.

Yes, lawyers played a pretty big part in the colonisation of Australia, as did America itself.

Should new reserves be left untapped or its citizens made even richer? Norway’s prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg, looks as though he has just stepped out of a Bond movie. Tanned and fit from regular cycling and skiing, you can see why he is known as Norway’s pin-up. It has fabulous oil wealth, with more than $400 billion (£210 billion) earned from petroleum reserves. With oil at $120 a barrel, Norway is earning $1.7 billion a week. At this rate the government’s pension fund, the world’s second-biggest investment pool, will be worth $510 billion by the end of the decade. If this is tricky to manage, Stoltenberg has an even bigger question: how much richer should he let his country become? Recent new oil and gas discoveries in the Arctic, suggesting Norway has only just started to tap its hidden wealth.

The US Geological Survey estimates that a quarter of the world’s undiscovered oil reserves lie below the Barents Sea, around the Lofoten Islands and along the coastline to its border with Russia - it is already being dubbed the northern Persian Gulf. Geologists say Norway has dipped into only a third of its potential liquid gold and a tenth of its gas deposits. To date Norway has had only 1% of the world’s reserves. But it has been able to sell 90% of all the oil it finds because its production methods are so efficient. Now it is the world’s No 3 oil exporter - only Saudi Arabia and Russia are bigger. Norway ships 2.9m barrels a day - half of China’s daily consumption - and is the fifth-biggest gas exporter, providing 30% of Europe’s needs. Since oil was discovered 35 years ago, Norwegians have enjoyed one of the highest standards of living and a social welfare system whose generosity makes you gasp. At current oil prices, Norway’s statistics show that it is the country with the world’s wealthiest citizens - per capita income is $68,000 - although the International Monetary Fund’s ranking puts it a close second to Luxembourg. Current gasoline prices in Norway are $5.07 per gallon.

Norway is the country with the highest income per head in the world. Government: Prime minister Jens Stoltenberg leads the Labor party, which governs in coalition with the Socialist Left and Centre party The population is 4.6 million, making Norway the least densely populated country in Europe Gross Domestic Product is $194 billion. The estimate for non-oil GDP growth for 2008: 2.7%-3% Core inflation (without energy) is 0.7%. Unemployment is 3.7%.

Contrast this with the campaigns in the United States to prevent drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and drilling offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, off the West coast in the Pacific, and off the East coast in the Atlantic. The environmental activists want exploration of new oil fields to be off limits forever, and Democrat politicians want to develop alternative energies, force Americans to change their lifestyles with conservation, and punish the oil companies with windfall profit taxes. The drilling in ANWR would only cover an area the size of an average U.S. major airport and would provide all the oil required for 10 years. A new black gold rush is under way, this time in North Dakota. The potential payoff is huge — up to 100 billion barrels of oil. That’s twice the size of Alaska’s reserves and potentially enough to meet all U.S. oil needs for two decades. Until now, the obstacles to production seemed overwhelming. The crude oil is locked away in rocks that are buried miles underground in the Bakken Play, a field that stretches into Montana and Saskatchewan, Canada.

But times have changed. High oil prices and new technology make it worth the effort. Computer analysis and remote sensing systems, plus smart drills that can probe horizontally or snake left and right, vastly improve the odds of locating new pools and putting them into production. And though oil is unlikely to remain priced at current stratospheric levels, prices won’t drop to much lower levels, which happened several times since the 1970s, and cause new exploration to dry up. Even if prices fell by half, many barrels of oil could still be produced — profitably — from the region. An official government survey of the Bakken region’s oil treasure trove is due out next month. The report is expected to play it very conservatively, because it will confine estimates to the amount of oil that likely can be produced profitably based on last year’s oil prices. It will also not take into account any further technological advances that might make it even easier to extract more oil. “The Bakken is much like the enormous natural gas field that sat for many years under and around Dallas until people figured out the geology and how to drill it out economically,” says Lucian Pugliaresi, president of the Energy Policy Research Foundation. There’s at least a smell of the “Old West” as petroleum companies rush to stake their claims in the Bakken Play. Marathon Oil recently acquired about 200,000 acres in the area and will drill about 300 oil wells within five years. Brigham Exploration and Crescent Point Energy Trust are also interested in some of the action. EOG Resources alone figures it can produce 80 million barrels of oil from its Bakken field. Figure on at least five years before the oil starts flowing in large volumes. A lot of work will need to be done first. In addition to installing drilling gear, firms must build supporting infrastructure, including roads, pipelines as well as new water, sewage and sanitation systems to meet the needs of workers and other area residents. Note that the Bakken Play region is not an environmentally sensitive area similar to Alaskan tundra that has stymied much oil field development because of concerns about damage to the fragile environment. Still, some environmental protests are sure to emerge and may gum up development for a while, but they’re unlikely to stop oil production from the Bakken fields.

There has not been one petroleum refinery built in the U.S. in the last 25 years. In the same period, 82 ethanol plants have been built with a capacity to produce nearly 3.7 billion gallons annually, and producing 4.4 billion gallons in 2007. There are also 16 ethanol plants and two major expansions under construction with a combined annual capacity of 740 million gallons. U.S. ethanol plants are expected to produce 6 billion gallons in 2008, while federal legislation only calls for 8 billion gallons of renewable fuel use by 2012. Even with this capacity, the United States imported a record 300 million gallons of fuel ethanol in 2007 from the traditional Caribbean Initiative (CBI) countries, with Brazil furnishing 90 million gallons, according to final data from the U.S. International Trade Commission. With crude oil prices topping $120 per barrel and gasoline prices across the country at or near $3.60 per gallon, consumers are seeking use of domestic renewable fuels as a means of adding to supply and lowering prices.

Will the Democrats and the environmentalist radicals kill all this potential for U.S. energy independence, trying to find another porcupine caribou to save? Or will we take Norway’s approach by drilling and ignore the groups trying to create obstacles?

SERIOUS OPTIONS PLEASE (Part Two)

These two processes here actually might have some merit, so rather than include them with the processes in the previous article, I’ve included them separately here.

GEOTHERMAL POWER
There are two actual methods of operation in this Geothermal process.
The first is the extraction of hot water and steam from the vicinity of volcanic sites, and you would be aware of hot springs where the steam bubbles to the surface through hot mud. These sites are closest to the surface, and the steam from them is currently being used to generate electricity effectively in Iceland, New Zealand, and in the US as well, albeit on a small basis for all these plants.

The second process is quite an interesting one, and even though it sounds like Science Fiction, it is actually being made to work by a company in Australia.
The Company is GEODYNAMICS. The two graphics and the text are from their website. It’s a large website, but navigating across all the tabs shows some very interesting information, further highlighting that it’s not the green crackpots who produce viable alternatives, but real, working engineers. The acronym HFR stands for Hot Fractured Rock.

The HFR geothermal process is a closed system, with two loops. The first loop uses water to extract heat from the buried hot rocks. The simplest hot dry rock power plant comprises one injection well and two production wells. Cold water is pumped under pressure down an injection well where it flows through an underground heat exchanger in the hot granite. It is then returned to the surface through production wells. Because this loop operates under pressure, the super heated water remains a liquid, with no steam generated. This water heated to greater than 200 degrees C then returns to the surface under pressure. The high temperatures of the hot water are transferred to the geothermal power station loop via a heat exchanger. This second closed loop uses liquids with a low boiling point (similar to those used in fridges and air conditioners) and this drives a turbine system. The cooled geothermal water returns to the underground heat exchanger where it is reheated. The twin loop system is known as a binary geothermal power plant.

This has real prospects of actually being able to provide good baseload power. Deep in the Earth are layers of solid rock heated by the Mantle, that large layer between the Earth’s Crust and the Earth’s Core. This is not similar to the geothermal activity around the volcanic areas and hot springs of the other process because this HFR area is stable and not close to the surface where it can result in eruptions of any sort. There is a need for a three kilometre layer of sedimentary rock above the heated Granite. Old and expired gas wells provide perfect places for this process, because the vacant space (where the gas was) already exists, and this is the space the pressurised water is pumped into. There may be some conjecture that over time, the rock may cool, but consider this. So far exploration has found suitable areas where this process can be used, here on the Australian Continent. Those areas currently stand at around the same area as the whole State of California, and some areas are quite vast, so the inherent heat would be difficult to dissipate, if at all. The inherent problem is evaporation to a degree of the water so some might need to be brought in, but the only part above the surface is in the pipes leading to the heat exchanger, so evaporation is not the problem you might perceive when viewing cooling towers at other plants. The infrastructure would also need to be built, but the process is a lot cheaper than nearly every other alternative.

This actually is a viable alternative, and it’s already producing electricity.

COAL SEAM GAS
For so long this gas was just an added problem in the coal mining process itself. Now, engineers have found a way that it can be used. Coal seam gas (CSG) is associated with every coal mine in existence. Remember back to stories from long ago how underground coal miners used to take birds in cages down the mines as an early warning of the presence of the volatile and highly explosive gas. That gas is coal seam gas, and surprisingly, it actually has some good prospects. An earlier process I mentioned was the use of LNG to fuel combined cycle turbines. CSG can be used in the same manner, and naturally enough, is as readily available as coal itself, because wherever there is a coal mine there will be CSG. It has an advantage over LNG in that it produces less carbon dioxide at the well head because the carbon is sequestered in the coal itself, and this is released during the burning phase, so using CSG produces less carbon dioxide at the plant than even the LNG does, and only 5% of the CO2 produced by coal fired power plants themselves. It is however still a fossil fuel. It has been suggested that this could prove to be a reliable interim replacement for coal fired plants while a reliable renewable alternative is found. Currently in Australia, CSG is being used to fuel a combined cycle power plant that produces a rated maximum of 635 MW of power, supplying power to an estimated 400,000 homes. It is in the range of intermediate baseload power and is still best used in the same manner as the other combined cycle turbine, that of peak power requirements. The CSG will also be piped to the mineral exporting large port of Gladstone where another plant will be constructed and run from this gas

However, why I wanted to leave this process to a separate article is that it has thrown up an interesting development. One of the major power companies here in Queensland Australia is the developer of this process of using CSG for the purpose of running a power plant. Because of the drastically reduced greenhouse gas emissions, there is the perception of being ‘green’ by its very nature.
Since news of this plant using the CSG process broke, a huge power company from the UK has launched a multi billion dollar takeover bid for the company.
As much as you think of this as understandable, consider something you may not have thought of.
Remember Kyoto. I have to occasionally refer back to it so we don’t think we’re being sidetracked.
What arose from this was that companies will have to start paying carbon tax or offsetting their carbon footprint. One way to achieve this is for the company to show it has interests in environmentally conscious things. Because this use of CSG is a lot ‘greener’ than most other power plants currently in use, then the big UK power conglomerate, if it succeeds in the takeover, can then say that it has actually invested billions in environmentally conscious power production, thus offsetting their large greenhouse gas belching plants they operate in Europe. It has nothing to do with magnanimously investing in green power for the benefit of the environment. It’s doing this to protect the shareholders returns from the huge impost of the new carbon taxes.

In the next article, I’m going to bite the bullet and venture into Solar Power, for so long the mantra of the green lobby, who perceive this as being the answer to all our trouble with respect to Electrical power.
